Grind Affogato Recipe

The perfect summer pick-me-up: a Grind affogato. Here's your step-by-step guide.

What Is Affogato?

Fun fact: “Affogato” means drowning in Italian. The word is used to describe when a liquid is poured over food, usually cold food.

A traditional affogato includes vanilla gelato or ice cream served with a shot of espresso. It’s often found on the coffee menu at Italian restaurants, so we personally don’t think it counts as a full dessert. Which means we can have 4 of them a day.

Our simple instructions for making this delicious Italian dessert at home.

  1. Put a generous scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream (or the flavour of your choice—we love a pistachio affogato) into a wide shallow glass or cappuccino mug
  2. If using a coffee pod: Place the glass underneath the spout of your coffee pod machine and extract a short shot of coffee directly on top of the ice cream. If using ground coffee: brew one shot of espresso using your favourite brewing method and pour over the ice cream.
  3. Sprinkle with some grated chocolate and nuts.
  4. Dig in.

Best Ice Cream for an Affogato

An affogato is typically made with vanilla gelato, but a good quality vanilla ice cream works just as well. We love switching it up with flavoured ice creams or flavoured coffee pods: our Baileys Coffee Pods taste incredible in an affogato.

A classic affogato is made with two cups gelato to one shot of espresso, but you can play with this ratio according to what you're after.
