We’re on a mission to change the way we drink coffee for the better, holding ourselves accountable for choosing sustainable materials, ethically sourcing from regenerative farms, preventing plastic pollution, and supporting all the Grind people. 

Better coffee is coffee that protects the planet instead of polluting it. We source all our coffee directly from producers around the world who run small-scale, sustainable farms and who look after their workers, and we pay them higher than the rates set by Fairtrade. 

Yes. That’s a big part of who we are and who we strive to be. All our packaging is recyclable, our coffee pods are certified home-compostable, and our whole bean and ground coffee packaging is plastic-free and industrially compostable. 

With our charitable foundation, The Better Coffee Foundation®, we recover ocean-bound plastic for every pod, cup, and can we sell. In 2023, that was over 60,000kg of plastic saved from the ocean. 

The short answer is no, because it doesn’t need to be. 

This is the long answer: the reason our coffee isn't always certified organic is that it's difficult and costly to register for the certification, and many of the farms we work with are too small to afford it. Almost all of these farms are family-run by people who have been growing amazing coffee for decades, without using any harmful chemicals or pesticides. They know what they’re doing. 

Like the above, the short answer is no, because it doesn’t need to be. 

This is the long answer: working directly with the producers who grow our coffee beans enables us to establish and maintain long-term collaborative relationships that we wouldn’t have with a Fairtrade certification. The rigid certification requirements can lower the earning potential of some farmers—since the prices are set by a third party—and encourage the production of poor quality beans. It costs farmers to participate. 

To us, it makes much more sense to work with the growers themselves. We decide on prices together, always above the “Fair Trade” price, and they grow us some of the world’s best coffee. 

Our Whole Bean & Ground Coffee comes in five different blends, all created by our certified Q Graders and roasted by us in London. 

Our House Blend is our signature blend (we also have this in decaf—thank us when you’re not shaking and jittering at 4pm). It’s naturally sweet and nutty, and designed to pair perfectly with milk. 

Our Light Blend works best for espressos or long blacks, whilst the Dark Blend is heavy-bodied and bittersweet. 

And our Editions roast changes regularly, the result of our Head of Coffee sourcing the best in-season, single-origin coffee from incredible coffee growers around the world.

There are loads of great coffee grinders out there, but these are our personal favourites:

The Rhino Hand Grinder - a little labour intensive, but great for filter coffees and easily adjustable. 
The Wilfa Coffee Grinder - really easy to use and electronic so there’s no elbow grease required. 

If you’re using an espresso machine for a double shot, then our roastery team recommends using an 18g dose for a 34g yield and this should be extracted over 25-32 seconds.

A top tip from the Grind Roastery: the extraction time is dependent on the age of the coffee, so the longer it’s been since the coffee is roasted, the longer the extraction time will be. 

If you’re using a bean to cup machine then we’d recommend playing around with the grind until you find the best flavour for you. Start with a medium-fine grind, and adjust it based on your preferences.

If your brew is sour, it’s probably under-extracted. Try a finer grind next time, and/or increase your brew time slightly. If your brew ends up bitter (over-extracted), use a coarser grind and/or decrease your brew time.

Our ground coffee is an “omniblend”, so we don’t advise using it in espresso machines. Instead, we’d recommend using our whole beans and using a grinder to create a finer grind size that works for your espresso machine. 

Our ground coffee is a general purpose grind, which means it works really well for all styles of filter coffees—French press, drip, V60, Aeropress.

We use the Mountain Water Process to decaffeinate our bean and ground coffee, which involves immersing the coffee beans in water at varying temperatures and pressure in order to extract the caffeine. No chemicals are used, and a filtering process maintains the beans’ characteristic flavours.

Coffee pods are a great way to have barista-style coffee from the comfort of your own home, but the majority of pods on the market are made from plastic and aluminium, both of which take hundreds of years to decompose. Millions of these pods are thrown away every day and end up in landfills. 

Our solution was to make certified home-compostable coffee pods that decompose in weeks, without doing any damage to the environment. 

Our pods are made from organic matter only. The material we use is PHA, which is made from micro-bacterial fermentation (much less gross than it sounds) and observes all the characteristics of plastics, whilst being 100% plastic free. 

Our pods are TUV-Austria OK Compost HOME certified and will decompose within 26 weeks (in the right conditions*). As our pods are the first in the world using this technology, this is the highest and most current certification standard globally. 

If you already have a home compost you can throw your pods straight in (once they’ve been used, obviously) and they’ll take care of themselves, enriching the soil as they decompose. Even if you don’t have a home compost, putting our pods in your general waste bin is still far better for the environment than plastic and aluminium pods, and they’ll still disappear without a trace.  * The average UK home compost is around 30°C.

Our pods are compatible with all original-style Nespresso® machines, and they’re (unsurprisingly) the perfect match for our own Grind One Machine. 

As our coffee pods are made from a compostable material, we recommend removing them from any machine you use them in straight after you've made your coffee rather than leaving them within the pod inlet until another coffee is made. If they're left too long, the bioplastic can absorb the excess water and expand, leading to the pods potentially getting jammed or the paper ring becoming stuck within the machine. 

We don’t recommend using them within in-built Nespresso® machines because the pods themselves like to be kept in a cool, dry environment. They’re also not compatible with Nespresso® Vertuo, Dolce Gusto, Lavazza, and Tassimo machines.

Our Next Day Delivery service is available for one-off purchases, with a cut off time at 12pm. The price will be shown at checkout. 

We currently ship to the UK, EU and USA. We're working closely with delivery couriers and hope to have more options available soon. 

All international shipping costs are calculated at checkout, but all subscription orders are shipped for free. 

Unfortunately, we don’t accept PO box numbers as we are only able to deliver to physical street addresses. Whether that’s your home address, office address, or your Great Aunt’s address, we’re not fussy where you want your order delivered, as long as it’s not a PO box. 

If you are placing an order outside of the UK, you may be asked to pay an additional amount to your shipping fees to cover any costs associated with importing parcels to your country.

We accept the return of our non-coffee products and our pods within 30 days of them being received. However, we only accept the return of goods in perfect condition, unopened and in their original packaging. We reserve the right to withhold a refund at any time, unless the product was damaged in transit.

1. Click the ‘Profile’ tab in the Grind app. 

2. Click on ‘Danger Zone’ (without panicking—it’s only called that because we’ll miss you).

2. Press and hold the large cup button. 

3. Start the machine and release the large cup button. 

Once the machine stops flashing, run it a few times with just water (do not load a pod).

If you’re using filtered water, we'd recommend descaling the machine every three months. If you’re using unfiltered water, then we would suggest descaling more often than this. 

You can use any descaling solution available at most local stores, but please do not use vinegar as it could damage the machine. 

Read the safety instructions on the descaler packaging and be careful when handling it near the machine: it’s abrasive and can damage the surface. 

There’s a descaling alarm that will trigger after 1,200 uses, where the lights will flash before the machine starts to heat. You can reset the machine by running the descaling function. Here’s how to do that:

1.  Remove any pods from the machine, as well as the drip tray, and clean the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.

2. Fill the water tank with your descaler and half a litre of water. Make sure it’s fully dissolved if you’re using a powder descaler.

3. Place a large glass under the nozzle, make sure the lever is down, and press and hold both buttons for three seconds. At this point the machine will begin to flash, and you need to press one of the pour buttons to activate the descaling. The machine will run all the contents of the tank through. Repeat this twice.

4. Fill the tank with water and run six cups through the machine to clear its contents and any residual descaler.

5. Once complete, press either of the pour buttons twice to exit the process.

If you find the machine has a lower water pressure than usual, this could mean that the nozzle is clogged. If you experience this, we recommend clearing out the machine by brewing 2-3 tanks of water without a pod.

This could also be because the hose inside the machine is bent or due to problems with the brewing unit, which requires repair at our roastery.

Yes! If you're unhappy with the amount of water for the different cup sizes, you can easily set the desired dose of water by programming the machine: just press and hold down the button until you reach the desired amount, and the machine will remember your preference. 

Just so you know, an espresso shot should be 30-35ml, which on the Grind One Machine takes about 10 seconds, and a lungo should be double this in volume and time.

The coffee is brewed at 90 as this is the optimal temperature to make a great cup of coffee. It's important to bear in mind that once the coffee reaches your cup, it's more likely to be about 60-70 degrees. If you feel the machine isn't heating up to this, it may be for the following reasons: 

1. It could be because you're not giving the machine enough time to heat up. Wait until the light stops flashing before making your coffee.

2. The machine being clogged can also affect the temperature. We'd recommend clearing out the machine by brewing 2-3 tanks of water without a pod.

We recommend always flushing the capsule every time you make a coffee. If you don't, sometimes the pod can dry to the outlet and get stuck. 

If a pod is already stuck, pull up the lever and push the button for a small coffee, and the capsule should be removed with help from the water pressure. If this doesn't work, try pouring some water on the capsule in order to soften it up before trying the same thing again.

The timings of our child/teen friendly times can be seen below: 

Greenwich, London Bridge, and Shoreditch: Under 18s permitted with adults, but must be seated by 6pm. 

Liverpool Street: Under 18s permitted with adults until 5pm.

Soho: Under 18s permitted, but not allowed in the bar area after 7pm.

Royal Exchange and Covent Garden: Under 18s permitted with adults at all times.

Please bear in mind that the only location with high chairs is our Greenwich Grind.  

You're welcome to come along to our venues to work for a few hours on weekdays, but we'd recommend booking a table, just in case. 

Just so you know, we can't always guarantee secure WiFi and we operate a no laptop policy after 5pm and on weekends (like an enforced work-life balance). 

Our menus will show which meals are VG, V or GF, but aside from this we will of course do what we can to cater for any allergies. 

Just let our team members know your dietary requirements when you arrive and they'll be able to suggest certain items and alternatives.

Lunch menu: 12pm - 5pm, Monday - Friday

Brunch menu: 12pm - 5pm, Saturday. 12pm - 6:30pm on Sunday
