Hot Tips for the Grind Cold Brew Bottle
How to extract all the best flavours and aromas from your coffee and make incredible cold brews at home.
We asked our Head of Coffee Howey to give us his expert tips on brewing cold coffee at home with our Cold Brew Bottle.
In Howey's professional opinion...
“OK, so here's the thing: cold-brewing is SO DAMN EASY! All you need is time.
…Well, ideally some scales too. We recommend 50g of ground coffee (that's about 7 tablespoons) to 1 litre of water.
All you need to do is put your ground coffee into the bottle's filter basket, pour the cold water on top, and leave it to brew.
15 hours works well for me, but even 6-8 can taste good according to our head roaster Adela (who makes these every day)."
Howey's Top Tips:
-
Grind your coffee beans just before brewing for the freshest flavour.
-
Use filtered water, which has more space in its chemistry to absorb tasty things from the grounds.
-
Go for a light roast (we recommend our Editions coffee or our Light Blend) as cold brewing brings out all of those fancy delicate flavours so well.
-
You can add a little more coffee and less water to make a concentrate that you can pour over ice, diluting it to the perfect level.
- Experiment with recipes! Try adding a little boiling water, stirring, and then adding cold water. Try leaving it for 48 hours. Try adding a bit of brown sugar. The world's your oyster.
What's so great about cold brewing?
Cold brewing extracts coffee compounds differently to hot brewing, resulting in a smoother, less bitter, and less astringent flavour profile. It also lowers the acidity of the brew, which can be easier on the stomach. We love cold brew for its silky smooth texture, rich flavours, and low acidity.
The longer extraction time also means that we can get all the incredible and complex tasting notes from our speciality-grade coffee. It’s sweeter and more mellow, so there’s less need to balance it out with milk or sugary sweeteners.
