How To Home Compost

You'll want to find a sheltered, but sunny spot in your garden to put your compost bin.

The sun helps break down everything inside your compost bin even quicker.

Fill your compost bin with soft green materials, this is things like grass clippings, weeds, leaves and vegetable waste and woody brown material, things like, twigs, wood chippings, paper, cardboard, straw and dead leaves. 

Where possible avoid letting any one material dominate your compost bin - especially grass clippings as these tend to create a bit of a slimy/smelly mess on their own.

Add your Grind home-compostable coffee pods as far into the centre of your compost bin as possible.

These will begin to break down in your home-compost bin within 180 days.

We recommend mixing your heap often so that it gets enough oxygen - this can be quite tricky to do by hand, so we recommend getting an aerator like this one. 

 Mature compost will be dark brown, with a crumbly soil-like texture and a smell resembling damp woodland.

When a compost doesn't get enough oxygen it can produce methane, which is something you want to avoid wherever possible.

Once your pods and other materials have turned into compost, you'll want to make sure you can put this to use.

Compost can be used both outdoors and indoors as a natural fertiliser for plants. Just mix it into the soil before planting, or use it on top of the base level of soil for your indoor and outdoor plants.
