Behind the Grind - Jess, General Manager at Holborn Grind.

What makes a Grind? It's all in the team and our General Managers are leading the way! This week we had a coffee (of course) and a chat with Jess, GM of Holborn Grind to find out some more about her Grind journey.

So Jess, what’s your Grind story?
I'd been stalking the Grind Instagram since moving to London for Uni and fell in love with the decor, then not long after the coffee!
I saw a job advert on the Insta and just thought 'why not?!' I'd been working at another cafe for over 2 years and felt I needed to shake things up a bit. I started at Soho Grind as Head Barista and AGM in August last year, and then became GM there in January, before recently moving over to GM at Holborn - phew!

Tell us, what's your favourite thing about Holborn Grind?
The interior is pretty stunning! The huge windows let in so much sunshine and in the dark they beautifully show off our 'Love is the drug' neon - so much so that people always stop to snap a pic of it.

A bit about you, tell us one of the most exciting things you’ve done in your life so far?
Moving to London was something I've always wanted to do - I'm living the dream!

Winter is coming... if you could go anywhere right now, where would it be?
I just had an amazing holiday in the South of France, I wouldn't mind being on a beach there again.

What three things couldn't you live without?
My mates, my eyeliner and chicken nuggets - in no particular order...

Grind in general always has a great vibe, but Holborn Grind always gets 5 stars on TripAdvisor - what's your secret?
I think that interaction with customers is the key. I love getting to know my customers. When they come back because of great service and a good chat, that's when you know you're doing something good.

Ok, serious question, do you think smashed avocado will ever NOT be in trend?
I hope not! Our smashed avocado, poached eggs and feta are ace (and our best seller!).

A little bird told me you can do pretty impressive latte art… who taught you?
Honestly, I loved watching everyone when I visited my first London Coffee Festival - I totally got the bug. From then I tried to absorb as much knowledge from my barista buddies as possible and I got some fantastic training from our Head of Coffee, Sam. Being behind the machine every day is the best practice!

Be honest - what's it like to work at Grind?
I have met some amazing people working at Grind - both customers and staff. Everyone in a Grind is there for a good time! It's hard work but really rewarding when you've got a strong team who are all passionate about what they do.

Managing Holborn Grind sounds like fun, what should we look out for from this cafe-bar in the next few months?
We may be known for our delicious brunch and great coffee by day, but we've got a brilliant vibe at night time too - come down and try some of our delicious cocktails! Winter nights are best spent with an Espresso Martini in hand, if you ask me...
