Behind the Grind - 10 Minutes with Issey, Digital Marketing & Production
It's been a busy 2017 so far, with events, pop-ups, new openings and the London Coffee Festival - and we're just getting started. This week, we thought we'd take another look behind the scenes and introduce you to another one of our own. Those who follow us on Instagram (and you really ought to) might know her already - as Digital Marketing and Production, Issey documents life at Grind through photos and video.
Hi Issey, how did you join the Grind family?
I've been a part of the Grind family for six months now - where has time gone seriously!? Instagram actually helped me get my job, and you can see a few of my photos reposted on the Grind account going back for years. I'm quite particular with the way I curate my own account - mostly symmetrical architecture photos which I shoot on my iPhone 7Plus or Sony A6500. As we all know Grind Cafe/Restaurants are so instagrammable most of my coffee photos were and still are from inside a Grind! My photos were re-posted on the @grind account before I joined and it became a regular thing.
I saw the job advertised while I was away in NYC, applied, and the @grind Instagram account was added onto my iPhone on my second day, no pressure hey!
Tell us a few things you couldn’t live without right now?
Grind coffee (obviously), my Bose earphones, and my friends.
If you could be anywhere right now where would it be?
Ibiza, because I just got back and 2 weeks wasn’t long enough.
Tell us three things about you.
Well it’s your lucky day.. I’ll tell you four. I've never died my hair, I have travelled to 5 out of the 7 continents of the world, I love techno music and I studied Interior Architecture at UAL.
What does a day in Grind HQ look like?
When I get into the office there is almost always filter coffee made by the amazing Preeya or Howey our Head Roaster. I answer my emails, check all social platforms, plan / prepare for meetings and make sure I have made a list of things I need to get done! I’ll occasionally take a stroll through to the roastery to smell the coffee beans, but it does get super hot down there - I don’t know how Howey does it.
I meet up with Teddy, Head of Brand, and see what the week holds. Usually lots of designing, planning, photo editing and conversations about random stuff. We don’t take ourselves too seriously in Grind HQ.
How many coffees do you have in a day?
Usually about 3-4 cups. Sometimes Filter, sometimes a Flat White.. recently it's been Iced Coffees with Oatly milk and nothing else!
How do you manage @grind Instagram account?
I’m sure a lot of you would agree that our phones hardly ever leave the palm of our hand or jean pocket and I’m quite lucky that the main aspect of my role at Grind is primarily run from my iPhone. Instagram posts are usually scheduled a few days in advance for up and coming events we have and offers. I love using super cool images taken by customers / photographers which I always repost with accreditation.
Instagram Stories are the daily challenge, being innovative keeps me on my toes - I like taking the viewers on a journey and tease them with tasty cocktails or smashed avo pics.
Managing all social platforms with a following of 100K+ customers sometimes can be overwhelming, but the immediate feedback through likes, comments, reposts and DMs makes the job super rewarding.
What do you do in your spare time?
I usually check out exhibitions, go on walks and find undiscovered buildings which I photograph and go on bike rides and chill with friends. Recently I was Creative Director for a short film called OMGshesbald written by my friend Char, all of our friends came together to help, it was such good fun. The film was recognised by DAZED magazine last month - check it out.
